Writing with Dan Thompson on using AI to audit AI, Hall argued
It seems inescapable that we will have to have models that oversee other models
, while warning thatunsafe actions taken by agents are more costly and so even 95% might be unacceptable.
The Free Systems essay examines the limits of AI auditors, including METR's own caution that its analysis agents may have erred and may not be robust to deception, and the trade-off that catching more real problems means more false alarms. It treats AI oversight of AI as unavoidable but not yet reliable enough for high-stakes agent actions.
